Humin Measured the Wellbeing ROI of Wellness Retreats

OPPORTUNITY

Do wellness retreats work?

Burnout is costing billions, yet most wellness programs fail to produce lasting change. Do wellness retreats really offer their guests transformational wellbeing benefits beyond their stay?

Does the Miraval experience impact the wellbeing of guests from a scientific measurement perspective?
Are any realized wellbeing benefits sustainable (lasting ROI) after the Miraval experience?
How are other wellbeing dimensions impacted using the Healthy Minds Framework (HMF)?
PROCESS

Science meets hospitality

A rigorous research process captured the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of the Miraval experience, revealing where and how transformation happens.

The study consisted of a longitudinal design with baseline, two-week, and 60-day follow-ups.
A total of 266 guests enrolled with 176 completing all follow-ups of the study.
The measures included HMF wellbeing, stress, mindfulness, self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and community metrics.
DISCOVERIES

Lasting wellbeing benefits

The research uncovered the specific human skills and environmental conditions that drive the deepest change, and why Miraval guests continue to grow long after their stay.

62% of guests reported a numeric decrease in stress lasting 60 days post-departure.
Guests reported an incremental 30% stress reduction for each additional night stay.
This study demonstrated a 26% reduction in the proportion of guests reporting "high stress."
APPLICATION

From retreat to real life

Miraval didn’t just make guests feel better onsite. It equipped them with skills and insights they continued applying weeks later in their personal and professional lives.

Improved self-efficacy was noted by one guest as “I need to slow down and breathe, set up boundaries to manage stress.”
Respondents described being “more attentive, focused, and present in daily life.”
Participants left with “stronger clarity around their values and sense of meaning in life.”
IMPACT

Transformation that scales

This study shows that immersive wellbeing can create measurable, durable improvements, offering a blueprint for corporations, communities, and the broader hospitality sector.

Guests reported humanly significant improvements in both job satisfaction and self-efficacy.
Almost all respondents, 95%, reported strong community with 70% stating they formed new friendships.
Gains in mindfulness and awareness were reported by participants well after their stay, even at 60 days.

“Our findings with Miraval guests show that wellbeing is not abstract, and that it can be rigorously measured, intentionally cultivated, and scaled. The durability of these outcomes demonstrates that environments designed through applied science can meaningfully elevate human flourishing and redefine what excellence in hospitality looks like.”

“This study shows how scientific measurement can reveal what truly drives wellbeing and how those insights can be applied far beyond a single industry.
